You gotta wanna.
It comes up in casual conversation when I meet someone for the first time or have a conversation with someone about health. “How do you do it?” they ask. “What keeps you going?”
Those are good questions. Most people have trouble being consistent with health practices. Most people have tried new routines or practices. Sometimes they stick. More often, parts of them stick and people go back to some version of what they were doing before.
So, how do I do it? There’s no secret formula. There’s no step-by-step process. In fact, what I do may not work for you at all. But, the truth is that whatever it is you think you need or want to have may not be really what you desire. What you desire isn’t tangible, necessarily. You want to have energy. You want to feel young and vibrant. You want to be strong. You want to feel happier. The fact is, you gotta wanna. You must want these things so much that you’re willing to be uncomfortable for a little while. You’ve got to be willing to change. Change your thoughts, your habits, your lifestyle.
You gotta wanna be disruptive.
To be honest, it’s easier for me. I’m not saying that to show off. I’m saying it because I made it easier by identifying myself as a healthy person. I did this by making a career out of it. So, now I have to walk the talk. I would fail in my business if I didn’t. No one would listen to me or believe me if I didn’t look healthy or act healthy. In a way, this was a short-cut.
You don’t have to be so passionate about health that you make a career out of it as I did. But that doesn’t mean you can’t identify as a healthy person. Actually, the bottom line is: you must identify as someone who is healthy. This is the key to your everyday decisions about what you do to nourish yourself. Social media can be a big help for this. It allows you to be held accountable (and your friends don’t even know they are helping). They will see your posts and see your transformation and that can be a driver for you.
But what if you are not on social media? OK. Here’s another way: tell everyone you know, every time you come across a friend or family member or acquaintance: “I am on a new health path where I am going to look and feel incredible for the rest of my life.” Do that, and repeat it to the same people when you see them again. Give them reports on what you’ve done and what you’ve added and let go of. You may even inspire others. You just gotta wanna do it. I’ll tell you this: it will be worth the effort.
The “gotta wanna” is just another way to say your “why.”
You want to have energy–to feel young and vibrant.. Why? Because it feels good and I can do more things, go to more places, and enjoy myself more often. You want to be strong. Why? So that you can open that jar of pickles. So you can pick up your grandkid, niece or nephew, dog, cat, whatever. So you can simply get up easily. So you can do it yourself. Whatever it is that you want in the realm of health, ask yourself why. Be clear. Use that as motivation.
We only have so much time on this earth of ours. Every single day, hour, minute is a gift. How do you want to spend it? Feeling good, right? What does it take to do it? A mindset focused on your “gotta wanna,” your “why.”
You are a healthy person. Show up as one.
