Why Health Coaching Matters

Happy Birthday Nourish

Why we do what we do.

We are so grateful for all the clients and colleagues we have connected with over the years. We love it so much, our present to ourselves on our 6th birthday is taking a course to prepare us to become a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). Happy birthday to us!

We got a great start through Institute for Integrative Nutrition® (IIN®) with certification from Columbia University, but with a growth mindset and a concentration and creating more of an impact with our clients, we wanted to up the game. One thing we know for certain – with our combined 26 years of health coaching – the basics are where the magic happens.

At Nourish, we call the basics, our Foundations of Health.

  1. Nutrition
  2. Sleep
  3. Movement
  4. Mindset
  5. Connection

These principles are what we come back to whenever we have questions about what is going well and what isn’t for a client (and for ourselves too). Too often, we skip these and go for the easy button.

The Foundations aren’t sexy, and it doesn’t happen overnight. But there is really good news…it works! Over and over again, when our clients reconnect with these Foundations, they get results.

Vitality happens with consistency and practice.

Vitality happens with small changes and moment to moment decisions that build over time to something stronger and more resilient than before.

News that really isn’t news – but we need the reminder: You can’t buy health and happiness and you can’t ‘quick-fix-it.’ It doesn’t come in a bottle, a pill or a weekend. Stop searching for that easy button – you will get burned.

Glennon Doyle, author and advocate for living your life on purpose, says to herself when shit is going down: “I can do hard things.” And then she presses on with the hard stuff and reminds herself to be brave.

  • What would happen for you if you start looking at our health like a marathon, not a sprint?
  • What would happen for you if you start looking at the numbers as data – not our worthiness or a validation that you are ‘right or good?’

More than anything else, when you mix an investment of time, energy, focus and consistency with grace and compassion, you get the results you want. The results your body needs to thrive.

What do you really want?  What is really super important to you?

Fitting into those jeans OR being active with your kids and grandkids instead of watching from the sideline. Or being around to watch your kids get married and have kids of their own. Or, climb that mountain or go on that trip? Sure, we want our legs to look great and not have our belly hang over our pants – we all want that – but when we dig deeper, we get to the heart of why we make the choices we do. We need to know our ‘why.’ That ‘north star’ is what will help us with our daily choices.

Oh, and side-note that is super important:

Who said you don’t already look great or that your belly isn’t the beautiful evidence you birthed a baby or two? These kinds of judgement are not the way to motivate ourselves to do the day-to-day hard things. (More on that in this post called Judgement is a Curious Thing)

Our health coaching practice helps peel those layers of judgement to get to the heart of why you will continue to do hard things that matter to your health and happiness.

Our job as health coaches is to walk with you in your struggles and your wins, to be your accountability partner as you navigate changing your choices that bring you more vitality. You can work with us via one-on-one personal coaching OR join our next group coaching which begins in January. We look forward to helping you peel the onion and gain that vitality.
