What is the difference between health and wellness?

Health is a state of being.

We often think of it in terms of feeling well or sick, having illness or disease or the lack of. Wellness, on the other hand, is a condition of living a healthy lifestyle. In other words, health is a result of wellness. We practice wellness to achieve health. Most of us know someone who has or had a life-threatening disease.

Many of these diseases are preventable. In fact, the number one cause of death in the U.S. is heart disease, which is mostly preventable by leading a healthy lifestyle.

As health and wellness coaches, we work with people to help achieve wellness by practicing habits that support health.

We do this by following our Nourish Coaches Five Foundations of Health:

  1. eat real, whole foods as much as possible, but not too much
  2. get enough quality sleep
  3.  move your body in a way that is sustainable, enjoyable, and appropriate for your body and lifestyle
  4. adopt or maintain a growth and positive mindset–being able to learn how to react or not react to stress; and
  5. connect regularly with people who love and/or support you

Wellness is managing your physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, environmental, and occupational well-being as an ongoing practice for life.

On the other hand, health is about achieving specific markers, such as weight loss, lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, lower cholesterol, etc. Health is a goal to achieve, while wellness is a multifaceted practice that is ongoing for a lifetime. At Nourish Coaches, our aim is to focus on the wellness practices that will help you look, feel and perform your best. That definition is slightly different for everyone. We meet you where you are and help you get to that new place of feeling comfortable in your skin.
